TRUE tales today!
When i was a lad, one of the "enterprising" things i did was "collect money"! remember the unicef milk cartons? no? well, in my school(i dunno if they do this anymore)around this time of year, the teacher gave us a unicef milk carton, and tell us a sad story about some kid in ethopia or some other 3rd world nation who was starving, and we needed to go out and knock on every door in the city, and beg for cash to send to these needy people! what the teacher did not tell us was in fact, the money was going to the corrupt governments of these people(MY OPINION) so, off I went, door to door, begging for cash!
Well, needless to say, they didnt get all my cash. i kept some for myself.
i didnt care at the time, i was a brat.
Another "enterprising" thing i used to do was shine shoes! the best place to do this was in barrooms. for some reason, the drunks liked the idea of a shoe shine boy comin in to shine thier shoes! i enjoyed doin it, and it was a real money maker! and i brought the cash home and we ate good! i came up with a novel idea one day to make more money, and that was to play deaf and dumb so i can get into the "titty" bars where the real money was! i made a mint!
we used to get into fenway park for free! heres how:
out behind right field, there was an alley between fenway park and a building next door. there was a fence dividing the right field bleachers and the grandstand, and next to that, was a small building that contained a rest room and the alley was behind the rest room wall and the building next door. it was wide enough between the two buildings so we placed our backs against the wall, and lifted our feet along the rest room wall, and shimmied up! the rest room was only ten feet tall, and soon, we were on the rest room roof, INSIDE fenway park, so we had a choice at this point, to the left was the grandstand, and to the right was the bleachers. we always jumped down to the grandstand side. we did this for years! after the 1986 world series, they walled off the alley!!
Getting into Boston Garden to see the bruins and celtics was easier! there used to be a hotel built right next door to the garden, and the players used to stay at the hotel. all ya had to do was go up to the 3rd floor, and walk across and into the garden! now when they shut down the hotel in the mid 70's, one of us would actually buy a ticket, and the rest of us would go behind the garden, and up the fire escape stairs and whoever bought the ticket would let us in!
