FACT OF THE DAY Today is the anniversary of the birth in 1758 of Admiral Horatio Nelson. Today, a monument to him stands on Edinburgh's Calton Hill. Built in 1816 and shaped like an upturned telescope, it served as a timepiece for ships in Leith - at 12:55pm a ball is raised on the monument's mast and when the one o'clock gun is fired from the castle, the ball drops.
