FACT OF THE DAY

Ever wonder why so many cities and towns in England end in the suffix "sex" (Middlesex, Sussex, Wessex, Essex)? Turns out that carnal knowledge doesn't necessarily run rampant in those areas. The "sex" suffix is actually short for "Saxon." And the "sex" cities are, in fact, older than England itself.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, settlers from the German areas of Angeln and Saxony made their way to Britain around 410 C.E. These Anglo-Saxons, as they were later called, settled what was considered a far-flung island of little value. They splintered off into tribal groups, which went on to form small kingdoms. By the ninth century, Britain was divided into four main kingdoms: Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia and Wessex. As time went on, the Saxons claimed more of the southern portion of the country, while the Anglii (or Angles, if you prefer) concentrated on the north. The regions claimed by the Saxons adopted shorthand names such as Sussex (Land of the South Saxons) and Essex (Land of the East Saxons).

And there you have it. Never let it be said that "sex" couldn't be explained in three paragraphs or less!
